Seminar 7. Practical D.O.E. Strategies

by Mr. Fred Khorasani, Ph.D.

Some of the most important functions of scientists and engineers in any discipline, R&D or manufacturing, is to develop new products and make them work, improve existing products, optimize processes, improve quality and reliability and maximize productivity quickly and economically. To accomplish this they need to run experiments and collect and analyze data. In general, modern techniques for experimentation are not a part of the university engineering curriculum. In this course, concepts, strategies and methodologies for experimentation will be discussed. Topics include factorial, fractional factorial experiments and response surface methodology.

It will be shown that experimentation is more than techniques taught in most Design of Experiments (DOE) courses. Methods for choosing a matrix for experimentation will be discussed. Graphical data analysis is emphasized. The disadvantages of some existing analysis methods will be shown. Real examples and applications based on the instructor's work with industry will be presented. JMP, an interactive data/statistical computer package, will be used to design and analyze experiments.
